Breakdancing

Breakdancing has been one of the most successful classes that we have worked with to date. The demographics of the children we are working with can easily connect with Hip Hop culture. More so than any other class, the breakdance students look up to their professors as role models. They believe that they can be breakdancers and, more importantly, they want to be.

Photography

Photography lessons are a fundamental part of ACE Projects. One of the driving forces behind the social divide is a result of the media's negative representation of the communities. Favela residents are defined by violence because this is how the media choose to depict them.

By harnessing the power of photography, our students are starting to change this image. They are controlling how their communities are being depicted and building their own vision of what favelas are.

Through photography, not only will our students learn a valuable skill, but they will have another tool to make foundational changes in their communities.

Art Therapy

Through just one year of Art Therapy classes. we have seen substantial differences. The children can communicate more eloquently through a change in attitude towards sharing. At the beginning of the course, most of the children were aggressive towards each other in regards to material and who had the right to use what.

Theater

One of the new classes we are excited to offer this year is theater. Theater classes are consistently used as a tool for community development, and we are thrilled to introduce them to ACE Projects. Theater classes help children build confidence in front of others, learn to read and remember lines and play at being anyone they want. They also have to work together and listen to one another, which are two skills that will prepare them for life.

Tutoring

Unfortunately, the school system in Brazil has adopted a “not my problem” mentality. Most of the children at ACE Projects receive excellent grades despite that many of them still have difficulties reading and writing in their native language. Teachers do not want to deal with the problem (or actually take an interest in their students) and prefer to pass them along to the next grade and next professor.

Rocinha Impact

ACE Projects work with local community leaders to educate and empower the change-makers of the new generation. Through our network of local leaders we offer powerful and engaging extracurricular support and inspiration to children from the community. Outside of extracurricular support our centers offer a small oasis for children and leaders to spend time with each other in a community space free from violence and negative activities.
