A favela is a large tight knit community usually on hillsides located throughout Brazil. Brazil’s largest favelas are in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Favelas are vibrant communities filled with a wide variety of cultures and diverse community members. Favelas are usually defined to be overruled by local drug gangs and crime ridden areas but what the general public understands of favelas is so far removed from reality. Whilst gangs are present in favelas, culture, beauty and community pervades and makes up the vast vast majority of these wonderful communities.
