When ACE started working with Tony we envisioned using photography as a transformative tool, a tool to let children from favelas show the world what favelas truly are like, to help break negative stereotypes and open future opportunities for residents who are not hindered by these preconceptions. To this end Tony started working with the children to develop professional photography exhibitions highlighting mothers from the favela and what it means to be a mother in the favela.
"Our Photography project gives an artistic voice to those who have been silenced"
The amazing work Tony Barros does for our children shows them that they can photograph their communities and experiences and share them with the world.
In 2019, we exhibited their work globally: 3 exhibitions in France, 2 in Rio, 1 in London and another in Cork, Ireland. Up to this point, we have had well over 4000 people seeing these exhibitions. That means 4000 people have seen the talent and vision of our children, and gain an insight into the lives they lead.
